Muslim Islam Halal Foods

"A Comprehensive List of Halal Food Products in U.S. Supermarkets" by Syed Rasheeduddin Ahmed is more than just of listing of food products by food category, such as: Bread, Cereals, Coffee, Ketchups, Oils, Syrups, Tea, Soft Drink, Yeasts, etc. All of these food categories contain national-name brands, with some local brands listed for certain states or even cities (190 pages of brand names). Of interest are the first 40 pages that explain why certain foods or either permissible (halal) or forbidden (haram) to Muslims, and some commentary is spent on their differences from certain foods which may be halal (korsher) to Jews - but are still forbidden to Muslims. This book identifies what religious `problems' that Muslims have with: alcohol-fermented foods, dairy enzymes & cultures, cheeses (pasteurized or not), artificial food flavorings, doughs, gelatins, etc. This paperback details how Muslims can locate permissible (halal) foods by code-symbols on food-products, but it cautions that while some foods may be labled `K' or kosher for Jews, they may nonetheless be haram for Muslims; this book helps to identify those differences. The author "has been a food industry professional for 26 years...and has developed [various halal] food products for supermarkets." By 2000 at least 4 editions of this book had been published.
